Kwara: Opposition politicians petition IG over death threats

Two opposition politicians in Kwara State, Abdulmajeed Oloriegbe and Ibrahim Oloriegbe, have raised the alarm over threats to their lives and property by unknown persons.

The politicians, who are supporters of a governorship aspirant in the Action Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Dele Belgore, said in the petition to the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, that they had been receiving several telephone calls from unknown persons.

They said the callers had threatened to deal with them for daring to support Belgore. They said the callers listed the names of some persons who had been either killed or made redundant for daring to seek political relevance in the state.

The petitioners said, “On the 31st of October 2010, members of the Oloriegbe family received two text messages from these telephone numbers - 08136795843 and 08079121726 - warning them to henceforth withdraw their support from Mr. Dele Belgore, threatening that their family house (which they are using for the campaign) will be burnt very soon.”

The petitioners claimed that the text messages have created fear and panic among members of their family and supporers of the aspirant.
