The three workers‘ union at the Ondo State- owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, suspended their three- month industrial action on Monday.
The unions, however, said that the strike would resume after two weeks if the state government and the governing council of the institution failed to meet their demands.
The workers are demanding the implementation of the 53.73 per cent increment in salaries and payment of arrears from the state government.
Besides, the unions also asked the state government to appoint a new rector for the institution.
Chairman of the institution‘s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Mr. Oluwabanji Kumuyi, who addressed his colleagues on Monday, vowed that they would embark on another round of strike if the government failed to implement their request
The meeting was attended by members of ASUP, Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics and the Non-Academic Staff Union.
Kumuyi noted that the executives of the unions had already discussed with the representatives of the government, and that there was no going back on their demand.
He said, “The unions’ representatives have had several meetings with the government representatives, which led to the death of three of the union leaders through an auto crash.”
He commended the Olowo of Owo, Oba Folagbade Olateru-Olagbegi; Bishop of Owo Diocese, Rt. Rev. Adedayo Oladunjoye; and the Chief Imam of Owo, Alhaji Oladesawe, who, according to him, “pleaded with us on behalf of the government.”
Kumuyi said that the monarch and the clergymen had promised the workers that they would ensure that Governor Olusegun Mimiko would meet their demands.
He said, “Our executives had several meetings with the three leaders of Owo community and they all appealed to us that we should end the industrial action and allow the government to fulfill its own side of the bargain since it had promised on many occasions that it would not implement the demand unless we called off the strike.”
He also commended the students for supporting the workers during the cause of the struggle.
