Two die as Police clash with land grabbers

 Two people were shot dead during a clash between mobile police officers and ‘area boys' on Thursday at Adekunle, Yaba. According eyewitnesses and residents of the area, the clash ensued at about 1pm when police officers stormed a large parcel of land near Adekunle junction to demolish shacks occupied by some area boys.

The area boys were said to have fought the police officers and seriously injured one of them, then the police regrouped from the State Criminal Investigation Department which is nearby and came back shooting a combination of canisters and bullets.

According to Olayinka Adewuyi, a resident of the area, the police officers were brought by the owner of the land to chase the area boys away so that he can develop it.

"What happened is that the area boys have been staying there since. You know they smoke all manner of things there, they do drugs there and that's where they have been living. But the man that bought the land has asked them to leave since but they said he has to pay them enough money for them to get another house. I heard that the man has paid some of them N10, 000 each and they said it is not enough. So they have been having problems with the man and he decided to use police to drive them away" he said.

"So when the police came the first time, the area boys fought them and injured one of their Oga, so the mobile police people, RRS they came and the areas ran away but they shot one boy dead." The mobile police officers belonging to Rapid Respond Squad, RRS, who were heavily armed, who garrisoned the Adekunle Junction till late evening, intermittently charged at the residents and passersby who had come out to watch and sympathise and they ran away for fear of stray bullet.

As shop owner closed up and parents took their kids away to safer faraway, a soldier who did not give his name, enter his car and left nearby Makoko where he was visiting.

"Though I'm a soldier but I know this people, they will come and raid this place and arrest innocent people and before you explain that you are a soldier they would have done what you will not expect. When I stopped joking with things like this is when I was sitting with a friend and a stray bullet came from somewhere and killed him" he said.

Though, the soldier's prediction did not happen exactly as at press time some eyewitnesses said police had earlier arrested many people in the neighbourhood including old men and old women.

The already tensed mood in the neighbourhood was heightened when another body of one of the area boys was discovered at the scene. Many people including the area boys who were puffing large wraps of marijuana, started crying, as the bodies were taken away in a commercial bus.

KMT honorary chairman's son shot during campaign rally

TAIPEI - On the eve of Taiwan's mayoral elections, Sean Lien, son of Lien Chan, honorary chairman of Kuomintang (KMT) party, was reportedly shot in the face when he was campaigning for a KMT candidate in Taipei County Friday evening.

He was receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Local media cited doctors as saying the brain of Lien the junior was not injured and his injury would not endanger his life.

80 pupils occupy dilapidated classroom as main building cracks

The buildings and classrooms in Alimosho Grammar School, Moshalasi, in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, are in a state of dereliction.

A visit to the school by PUNCH METRO on Wednesday revealed that the school has long been neglected.

Our correspondent observed that a two-storey building, which is the only modern one in the school, is under threat of imminent collapse and the school authorities have placed a red tape to mark it as a danger zone.

As a result, it was learnt that the SS2 and SS3 pupils, who occupied the two-storey building, had been relocated another one that had no roofs within the school premises.

Pupils were seen learning in the dilapidated buildings, said to be formerly occupied by SS1 pupils.

An SS3 pupil, who did not want his name in print, told our correspondent that nothing was working in the school.

He said when the classrooms became choked, some of the pupils were moved to nearby schools such as State High School, Moshalasi.

He added that the SS3 pupils, numbering more than 80 were in one class, while about 160 SS2 pupils occupied two classrooms in Alimosho Grammar School.

Another pupil, who identified himself simply as Ayomide, said because of the appalling state of the buildings and the congestion in the classrooms, most pupils no longer found learning interesting.

The pupil said, “Alimosho Grammar School is a hell of a place to learn. In this school, more than four buildings have no roofs. When rain falls, we are drenched and when sun shines, we are scorched. We learn under very excruciating condition.

Minimum wage: Jonathan fails to stop strike

Efforts by President Goodluck Jonathan to dissuade labour leaders from going ahead with a three-day warning strike over the N18,000 minimum wage failed on Tuesday night.

Jonathan had cut short an official trip to Lagos and rushed back to Abuja to meet with the labour leaders in his bid to avert the nationwide strike planned for today.

The government’s delegation to the talks included Vice-President Namadi Sambo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed; the Head of Service of the Federation, Mr. Steve Oronsaye; the ministers of Finance and Labour, Mr. Olusegun Aganga and Emeka Wogu respectively; and the Minister of State for Information and Communications, Mr. Labaran Maku.

Among the labour leaders at the talks, which began at 8.30pm and ended at 10pm, were the Nigeria Labour Congress Acting President, Mr. Promise Adewusi; Secretary-General, Mr. John Odah; and TUC President, Mr. Peter Esele.

Prison boss slumps, dies after returning from foreign mission

he police in Lagos State are investigating the death of a Deputy Comptroller, Nigerian Prisons Service, Mr. Sunday Tanwoju, who died in mysterious circumstances a few weeks after he returned from a foreign mission to Darfur. The police investigation is to determine if Tanwoju died of a natural cause or if unfortunate incident had any element of foul play as the death appeared mysterious.
