My comedy is a hunger-inspired project — Gbenga Adeyinka 1st, comedian

Gbenga Adeyinka
He gave himself the title, Comedian of the Federal Republic, CFR. No doubt, he has made his mark among the legion of comedians in the country. Gbenga Adeyinka, who doubles as the publisher of humour-laced magazine, Laffmatazz, shares his story with SAMUEL AWOYINFA

You are known for spontaneity in your comic jibes, how did you develop this strategy?

Like I always tell people, first and foremost, my own comedy is a hunger-inspired project… You don‘t want to go hungry, so, you have to be spontaneous; creativity must come when you don‘t want to be hungry. I always tell people that many of the things we do in life are things that God has planted in you. There are some people who will look at this nylon bag in front of us and take a walk; while others may be concerned with what fun they could get out of it. A lot of times, it‘s not you, although one reads books on how to get better and a whole lot of that, I think, first and foremost, it‘s a whole lot of guts and a little part of you.

Is it compulsory to be educated to be a comedian?

Nobody can teach you to be a comedian, but you can be taught to be a better comedian in terms of delivery, punch lines, packaging, and audience management. These are very essential. I have a comedy school; we don‘t teach our students to be funny, but we help them to be better persons, because they are funny. We help them to know what to say at the right time. For instance, you don‘t go to a corporate event and start saying ”den, the man com carry the woman”‘, and you start telling raw jokes. It‘s not enough to be funny; the average Nigerian is very funny, extremely funny. It‘s not enough to know how to move a car, the average Nigerian moves a car. For you to be an expert driver, there are some things you need to learn, and I think that is what school can do to you. But school can never teach you how to be funny.

Has comedy been able to pay your bills and put food on your table?
