England friendly against Argentina postponed

England‘s planned high profile friendly international against Argentina scheduled for Copenhagen on February 8 has been postponed, the English FA said on Friday.

”We are still looking to play in Denmark, on Tuesday February 8, and the opponents will be announced in due course,” an FA spokesman said.

Argentina pulled out of the fixture after it had to be switched from Wednesday night to Tuesday because of the Denmark team‘s commitments.

England manager Fabio Capello chose the Parken stadium because it was the perfect venue for the away fixture he wanted to play before the team‘s next Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales in Cardiff.

”The Parken Stadium in Denmark is ideal because of the climate and it has a roof and is heated,” the spokesman said.

Guillermo Tofoni, who handles Argentina‘s international calendar, said a match on the Tuesday did not allow sufficient time to get the players together.

”We are going to reprogramme the match with England. The two matches are still on. We already have the one in August 2013 for the 150th anniversary of the FA, at Wembley. We need to find a window for the first one,” he told Reuters.

”February 8 was complicated for getting the players together, more so for us with them playing in different leagues. The English have them more concentrated.”

Tofoni said Argentina would still try to arrange a friendly for February 9 with Portugal, Nigeria or a Middle Eastern country as possible opponents.

”I‘m working on that…It would be nice with Portugal. It could be played in London but let‘s not rule out Manchester, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlitos Tevez.”
