Poor Nigerians lack access to preventive health — Dr. Oshowo, laparoscopic/colorectal surgeon

Ayo Oshowo
Bonded by a common cause, the trio of Drs. Ayo Oshowo, Austin Obichere, and Abuchi Okaro, including other experts in laparoscopic and colorectal surgery, all of whom are Nigerians based in the United Kingdom, decided to introduce world-class diagnostic and endoscopic facility in Nigeria, where it isn‘t readily available. The team leader, Dr. Oshowo, discusses with NKARENYI UKONU what endoscopy is all about and how the services can be accessed

How would you describe endoscopy to a layman?

It is a procedure in which you look at the inside of a bowel through a screen in order to see the structural abnormality that needs to be corrected. A lot of people refer to endoscopy as passing a tube through the mouth, which is readily available in Nigeria; but they aren‘t endoscopic -that is, not attached to a camera. This technique involves the passage of a tube which is connected to a camera system so one can actually visualize everything inside of the intestine and if there is an abnormality there, either the cancer itself or what we call pre-malignant lesion which is a type of growth that would eventually develop into cancer, you can actually see it and have it removed. The camera that is attached to the end of the tube is like a telescope with very high lens properties. It is generally accepted as the best way to see in the most natural form, any abnormality or foreign objects that need to be taken out. It is quite a simple, easy and effective way of making a diagnosis of bowel cancer; that is, the stomach, the small bowel, large bowel, the intestines, etc. It is non-invasive, unlike radiology, which has its own side effects when you use light properties to see the areas that need attention; or surgery, which comes with so many risks. It is a common and standard practice in Canada, United Kingdom, USA, etc.

What problems does endoscopy detect?
