Flamingos coach tips Falcons for AWC glory

Flamingos coach Peter Dedevbo said on Tuesday that the Super Falcons were the only side in the ongoing African Women‘s Championship in South Africa that had the quality to win the competition and represent Africa well at the World Cup next year.

The Falcons won their three matches at the group stage of the competition to top Group A and an eventual berth in the semifinals, where they will face the Lionesses of Cameroon.

Dedevbo, who led the Flamingos to the quarterfinals of the U-17 World Cup in Trinidad & Tobago, told our correspondent on the telephone that the Falcons had a good blend of experienced players and new talents.

”The team have shown the quality that we expect of them and I believe if they continue with this they will win the tournament,” Dedevbo said.

”I thought the South Africans would be more difficult to handle because they were playing in front of home crowd but since the Falcons could defeat them every other obstacle should be less difficult.

”Equatorial Guinea were able to win the competition last year because they had the home advantage but that is not going to happen this year.”

Three players from the Flamingos squad – Loveth Ayila, Fracisca Ordega and Ngozi Okobi – are currently in the Falcons squad and Dedevbo sees their inclusion in the senior team as the best way to establish continuity.

He said, ”I‘m impressed with the way coach Eucharia Uche has introduced these players to big games. They will have the necessary experience at that level and that will improve their game.”
