Florida State’s Solomon Alabi goes up for a slam dunk past Gonzaga’s Will Foster.
Nigerian born basketball player Solomon Alabi has been assigned to the Erie BayHawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA) Development League by the Toronto Raptors less than a week after making his NBA debut.
The 22-year-old Alabi made his Raptors debut last Saturday in a 109-100 loss to the Miami Heat but he only got to play for 18 seconds and didn’t get to score.
The Development League, also known as the D-League, was established in 2001 and is the official minor league of the NBA and serves as a training ground for players who have played for two years or less in the world’s toughest basketball league.
However, regardless of Alabi’s move to the D-League outfit, he will continue to be included on the Raptors’ roster but will be placed on the team’s inactive list.
Although the 7-foot 1-inch Alabi doesn’t know how long he will be with the BayHawks before the Raptors get to recall him to their fold, he intends to make a difference for the side starting with their season opener on Friday against the Springfield Armor at the Tullio Arena in Pennsylvania.
“I’m hoping to come here and play and do whatever the coaches want me to do and try to get a win... with this team and work as hard as I can for as long as I can.”
Alabi thinks he’ll play two games for the BayHawks before returning to Toronto but the team’s coach Jay Larranaga is just glad to have the Nigerian in his team.
“I expect he’ll be able to show his talent in this league,” said Larranaga.
This is however the first time the Raptors have sent down a player to Erie since it became an NBA affiliate of the BayHawks last season.
