E’Guinea coach laments defeat
Equatorial Guinea coach Jean-Paul Mpila has lamented his side‘s defeat to Nigeria in the final of the African Women‘s Championship on Sunday at the Daveyton Stadium in South Africa.
The Falcons beat the Guineans 4-2, who hosted and won the last edition, to lift the trophy for the sixth time.
Mplila told Supersport after the encounter that the two own-goals conceeded by his team changed the course of the game for his side.
”It‘s a sad thing we lost because we came to this tournament to retain our title,” he said.
“We wanted to win but it‘s unfortunate the two own-goals changed the game in favour of Nigeria.”
Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea have qualified for the 2011 Women‘s World Cup in Germany. It will be the first time the Guineans would make it to the world showpiece.
Mplila said he was excited to have led the team in qualifying for the World Cup but that preparation for the tournament would be planned carefully.
”For now we‘ll take a rest and decide on the World Cup later on,” he said.
“The team have done a great job so far.”
