No cause for alarm over unceasing rains – Weatherman

Although it has continued to rain in parts of Lagos several weeks after it ought to have ceased, the weatherman says there is no cause for alarm.
Heavy downpour in many parts of the state has been causing flooding. Many parts of Ikorodu were flooded on Tuesday after one of such rains.
Speaking with Vanguard on the issue, Chief Thaddeus Obidike, immediate past director, Weather Forecasting Services, WFS, Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NIMET, said the rains were abnormal but not totally unexpected.
According to him, the rains should have ceased last month and the dry season ought to be on now.
His words: “The rains are not normal and do not fall within the usual organised rainfall pattern. The dry season ought to have started first week of November while the rains should have stopped last week of October. However, the rains are the types that signal the end of rainy season as they come with heavy winds and thunderstorm.
The rains are ending rather late. However, the end of the rains and coming of dry season can happen simultaneously.”
Asked the reason for the delay, Obidike, who retired last year, linked the feature to local disturbances and storm that could develop from the high sea. “It is not normal but it cannot be ruled because things like that usually happen.”
Obidike noted that NIMET’s prediction for 2010 was late on set of rainy season and early cessation, meaning the rains would start late and cease early.
On when the rains would cease, he said: “You may not see again. So, there is no cause for alarm.”
