Emenalo, Finidi set pace for Nigerian footballers

After years of playing on the sidelines, retired Nigerian footballers, Michael Emenalo and Finidi George, have made world headlines with their appointments at Chelsea and Real Betis, sparking a challenge for other Nigerians, writes PIUS AYINOR Major landmarks were made in Nigeria football on Wednesday and Thursday respectively as
Real Betis presented Finidi George as their director of international football while Chelsea
promoted former Super Eagles defender Michael Emenalo as assistant to manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Emenalo who featured for Nigeria at the USA‘94 World Cup has been with the London club since October 2007 as an opposition scout. Chelsea said the move ”is recognition of his efforts to date.”
He brushed aside the challenges from former AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini, Mauro Tassotti and Alessandro Costacurta who worked under Chelsea boss Ancelotti at Milan. There were also ex-Chelsea first-team coach Steve Clarke and former West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola, who was a fans‘ favourite during his time as a player at Stamford Bridge, were also thought to be in the running. The fact that he finished ahead of this pack proves that he has much to offer to Chelsea.
