I will knock out Harrison in seconds –Haye
L-R: Haye and Harrison]
Too much hype, and not enough substance was the message from David Haye as the World Boxing Association heavyweight champion spoke moodily of the defence of his crown against Audley Harrison, coming up today.
They were once roommates as amateur fighters for England, Harrison claiming he created the blueprint for the younger fighter to follow, yet Haye now holds a clear disdain for his adversary, as a prizefighter if not also as a man.
Harrison, of course, claimed on winning the Olympic gold medal that he would be the next Lennox Lewis. That was 10 years ago. Harrison claimed this week that if he defeats Haye, history will look on him as Lewis’s successor. That would be a grotesquely distorted view of the 39-year-old’s decade as pugilist in the ring.
“All this talk from Audley tells me he is mentally weak. I do think he’s a little bit crazy and lost the plot,” Haye said of his foe, nine years his senior and three inches taller.
“Audley is a mentally weak person. Look through his fights when he has been under pressure and (he hasn’t) pulled the trigger when he needed to. It will all bubble to the surface when we get in the ring. When we both get in that ring and I look in his eyes he’ll be petrified.”
