Cutting the nose to spite the face

On Wednesday October 21st, the Senate threw out the Electoral Amendment Act Bill forwarded to it by the Executive. Among other things the bill sought to allow political parties determine procedures for the conduct of their primaries. Not really a novel idea; it was an attempt to re-insert a section (87) of the Electoral Act which was deleted during the passage of the Act in August this year. But apparently realizing that the manner in which it dismissed the bill easily gives it away as having some axes to grind with the President, the Senate quickly went defensive, announcing to whoever cared to listen that the rejection was not targeted at President Goodluck Jonathan, neither did it underscore a collapsed relationship with him.
