Dimeji warns Siasia against home-based players

Former international, Dimeji Lawal
Ex-international Dimeji Lawal has warned Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, against relying on the domestic league players when building his team ahead of the 2012 Nations Cup.

Lawal came hard on the domestic league players, saying they lacked the quality to feature in high profile international matches.

He urged Siasia to reconsider the foreign-based players who have been shut out of the team due to their poor performances at the World Cup in South Africa.

”One big advantage of appointing Siasia is that continuity will be encouraged in Nigerian football,” Lawal told our correspondent on the telephone.

”But the coach should not bow to pressure and include too many domestic league players in the squad. Their quality is still below the required standard and we cannot afford to take that risk when the team play their next Nations Cup qualifying game next year.

”I respect Siasia as a coach because he can get the best out of the players and I would advise him to look at the squad that played at the World Cup in South Africa and select the good ones as he builds the team.”

Lawal said Everton forward Yakubu Aiyegbeni and West Brom striker Osaze Odemwingie should lead the attack.

”We have good players but the problem has always been getting the best ones to play a particular match,” he said.

”The Eagles‘ problem is still in the defence and I want Siasia to look beyond England when searching for defenders. We have good players in less-fancied leagues abroad but their quality is far better than what we have in the domestic league.”
