Disu tips Falcons to spring surprise in Germany

Tunde Disu

Former national coach Tunde Disu has hailed the performance of the Super Falcons at the African Women‘s Championship in South Africa, tipping them to excel in the Women‘s World Cup in Germany next year.

Nigeria beat Equatorial Guinea 4-2 on Sunday to win the African crown for the sixth time and also qualified for the World Cup for the fifth time.

In their past appearances at the World Cup, Falcons had failed to fly, with a quarterfinals effort in 1999, being their best result.

Disu said the team that beat Equatorial Guinea were better than others that had represented Nigeria in past World Cup competitions.

He said, ”You may have to ignore the development of women‘s football in Africa and concentrate on how the Nigerian team played in South Africa.

” It was a different team from what we have seen before. There is great understanding among the players and that is a product of having played together for a long time. You will also notice that they played as a team, with all the players helping themselves.

Nigeria were knocked out in the first round of the 2007 Women‘s World Cup in China after losing two matches and drawing one against Sweden.

Disu said there was promise in the present team that won on Sunday.

He said, ”It is a sign that they will do well in Germany. We don‘t have good record in women‘s World Cup but that is not saying that we have been disgraced.

“We strive to improve on what we are doing and I think this team can go one or two steps further than the last time we appeared in the World Cup.”
