Youth move against poll violence

Nigeria’s own system of elections is often like a do or die affair
As the general elections draw closer, several groups and organizations are being formed and mobilized to educate the populace on the importance of shunning election violence and other election crimes.
One of them is Coalition Against Violence in Elections (CAVE), a collaboration of NGOs, journalists and individuals committed to reducing politically motivated violence in Nigeria. Members of the group met yesterday in Lagos to map out plans on how to prevent election violence and monitor elections across the country. The coalition was convened in 2007 by Amnesty International and Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP).
Prosecuting those involved
“Most times, the election violence is politically motivated and sponsored,” said Adaobi Egboka, the Executive Programmes Director of LEDAP. “Nigeria’s own system of elections is like a do or die affair. Everybody wants to get there no matter what it takes so people don’t mind settling their issues at the ballot boxes instead of waiting to go to court. You see them sponsoring elections during campaigns just to make sure they get into power.”
