Fourteen activists of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra escaped death on Thursday when an L300 bus in which they were travelling skidded off the road and landed in a ditch.
The accident occurred at Amawbia near the Anambra State capital, Awka, as the activists were heading to Aguluozoigbo for the burial of Madam Elizabeth Umeh, the mother of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Victor Umeh.
Witnesses said the affected bus was part of a convoy of six vehicles, which was travelling in a reckless manner on the highway. MASSOB activists in the buses were said to have stuck their heads out of the windows as they waved outlawed Biafra flags and sang Biafra war songs.
The accident occurred shortly after a separate band of MASSOB activists clashed with a police patrol team at Umuzocha along Zik’s Avenue in Awka.
The bus hit the police patrol van, pulling off its front fender in the process.
The policemen in the van swiftly accosted the activists, who offered to fix the fender. Reason prevailed with the intervention of a senior police officer, who allowed the activists to continue their journey.
The funeral service at Aguluozoigbo went on without a hitch. The rites were performed by the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valarian Okeke, and the Catholic Bishop of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Hilary Okeke.
The burial was attended by eminent politicians, community leaders and members of the public from various parts of the country.
