The Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Most Rev. Sunday Makinde, has called for the establishment of more universities in the country to absorb the increasing number of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates.
Makinde said this on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
He said the limited spaces in the existing universities had prevented qualified candidates from acquiring tertiary education.
The cleric called for the establishment of more universities to address the problem.
“Proper and rounded education will move our country forward. But unfortunately, many qualified school leavers out there have not been absorbed because there is no space in existing universities.
“Governments should focus on scientific and technological education to fast track Nigeria’s industrial and economic development,” he said.
He hailed the planned establishment of 40 new universities in the country, and urged the proper equipping of the existing institutions.
The prelate called on the government and Nigerians to ensure the success of the 2011 elections.
Makinde said the electoral process would be perfect if the Independent National Electoral Commission, politicians and the public conducted themselves well.
