Scores of civil servants failed to report for duty in Abuja on Thursday after the two-day public holiday declared by the Federal Government to mark the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
A News Agency of Nigeria correspondent, who visited the Federal Secretariat complex in the Federal Capital Territory, reports that most of the offices were without activity as few workers resumed duty.
Head of Administration, Nigeria Copyrights Commission, Mr. Idowu Ogukuade, said that he enjoyed the public holiday with his family and was happy to return to work after the celebration.
“The staff turn out in our office is encouraging,” he said.
Another civil servant, Malam Sule Bala, said he could not travel out because “I am not financially buoyant and I have no reason to be away from work.”
Chief Monitoring Officer, Border Communities Development Agency, Mr. Emmanuel Bassey, said that he was eager to resume because he did not enjoy the break.
“I did not enjoy the break because I was posted here recently. My family is not here and I am yet to make friends, so the whole celebration was dull,” he said.
He estimated that an average of 60 per cent of the workforce reported for duty on the first day after the Sallah break.
Bassey said the Muslims in his office were yet to resume fully since many of them travelled out for the Sallah break.
