Going wild over European football

The recent communal crisis Rivers State between B-Dere and K-Dere, which led to the death of a cleric, was triggered off by argument at a football viewing centre, bringing to the fore once more the incessant violence at these centres across the country. ’TANA AIYEJINA and CHUKWUDI AKASIKE write on the recent crises at these centres which have sent several people to their early graves
Football viewing centres in Nigeria seem
to have become venues where football fanatics unleash violence on opposing fans and innocent people alike.
Due to the lack of glamour and decline of the domestic league, most football-loving Nigerians who cannot afford the pay TV channels where football matches in Europe are aired live, have decided to turn to the viewing centres where they pay as low as N50 to watch their favourite teams play.
Initially, it was fun to watch matches at these centres filled with fans cheering their various teams to victory but gradually hooliganism has crept into these centres In fact, some of the fans have even taken this hooliganism outside these viewing centres.
In May, a bus driver and fan of Manchester United crushed four supporters of Barcelona FC to death in Ogbo Town, Ahoada Local Government Area of Rivers State.
