Beware of desperate politicians, ex-gov warns Jega
Prof. Jega
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has been advised not to allow his desire for credible elections in 2011 to be derailed by desperate politicians.
A former governor of Kogi, Abubakar Audu, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Lokoja on Sunday, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Audu, who is a national leader of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, said the 2011 general poll was an opportunity for the INEC chairman to uphold the confidence Nigerians reposed in him.
He said, “I hope the end will come now for Nigeria to have proper elections is anchored on ‘One-man, One-vote,’ free, fair, credible and transparent elections.
“I hope that the promise by INEC and the Federal Government that everybody’s vote will count will actually count. I hope the promise will not be a mere rhetoric.
“I am only hopeful that this will happen because a lot of people know Prof. Attahiru Jega. The expectations of the people from around the world from him are very high and I sincerely believe that he will live up to the expectations and the Nigerian factor will not cripple him.”
Audu, who also advised the INEC boss to do everything possible to forestall the ills that characterised the 2007 poll, added that the nullification of several elections by the courts was testimony that they were sham.
The two-time governor, however, expressed confidence in the ability of the INEC boss to deliver on his mission.
He said that bringing his wealth of experience in the university to bear in the forthcoming general elections would correct the ills of the 2007 elections.
