Gunmen attack ex-aide of Mimiko

Dr. Olusegun Mimiko

Some armed men invaded the Akure residence of the former special adviser on political affairs to the Ondo State Governor, who is also a Senatorial aspirant in the Ondo South Senatorial District, Mr. Boluwaji Kunlere, in the early hours of Thursday.

Our correspondent learnt that the men, who struck at the Oda Road residence of the Labour Party chieftain around 1.55am, climbed a tree behind the building in an attempt to gain entrance to the compound.

The hoodlums who were armed with dangerous weapons such as guns and cutlasses were prevented from entering the house by the quick intervention of the night guards.

Kunlere, who informed journalists about the incident on Thursday, alleged that the attack was politically motivated.

He said some persons had been sending text messages to his supporters, threatening to deal with him.

He explained that the attackers, on sighting the security guards on duty, fired gunshots, but fled when they couldn’t gain entrance.

The acting Police Public Relations Officer in the state command, Mr. Wole Ogodo, confirmed the incident, but explained that Kunlere’s attackers were armed robbers.

He said, “The command is already investigating the matter. The hoodlums were armed robbers who came to the area to rob the residents of the area.”

Ogodo however, noted that one of policemen attached to Kunlere’s house shot into the air to scare the robbers who were robbing in the vicinity.

But Kunlere insisted the attack was politically motivated and that the police should conduct thorough investigation.

He said, “Around 1.55 am on Thursday morning while the guards and the dogs were moving round, some gunmen climbed the tree behind my house to gain entry into the building. Immediately they sighted the guards, they shot into the compound. ‘They later jumped down and took to their heels.’

He alleged that no fewer than seven of his close associates, which included his driver, personal assistant had received threat text messages in recent times.

“My driver, Saheed Jimoh and some of my supporters like Remi Olatubora, Lanre Adebowale, Idowu Ogunmade are few out of those who are being threatened by this faceless people.”

Kunlere however commended the men of the state police command and officers of the Special Anti Robber Squad for their timely response.

The LP chieftain urged police authorities to probe the attack on his house and the threat text messages sent to his supporters to protect their lives from the faceless group.
