Jonathan declares WAUG open

The West African University Games was on Wednesday declared open by President Goodluck Jonathan after the event had witnessed three days of sporting contest among the participants.
Jonathan, who was represented by Dr. Jatau Baba from the Ministry Education, advised the athletes to use the games as a means strengthening the relationship among the institutions.
Meanwhile, some of the events at the games have reached the quarterfinals stage with universities from Ghana and Benin Republic leading the race for medals among the foreign institutions.
In the second round of the men‘s singles in tennis, Kelvin Churcher of the University of Ghana, Legon, beat Bashir Aliu of Bayero University, Kano 6-4, 6-1 while Essando Kobina of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Tecnology, Kumasi, Ghana defeated Ganiyu Yussuf of the University of Lagos, 6-4, 6-0.
It was an easy ride for Magloiie Yakpa of University de Abomey-Calavi, Cotonou, Benin Republic as he overcame Ejiro Igharodje of the University of Benin, Nigeria, 6-0, 6-0,
FUTA‘s Olalenge Alayaki defeated Olaomi Olaleye of Lagos State University, Nigeria, 6-0, 6-0.
In the women‘s singles, Collins Orji of the University of Ibadan lost to Patience Onebhamhon of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Nigeria, 6-0, 6-0 while Oluwaseun Awoyo of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Nigeria, defeated Oluwatosin Ogundare of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Nigeria, 6-0, 6-0.
