Nigeria, Burkina Faso sign agreement on joint commission

Nigeria and Burkina Faso on Thursday in Ouagadougou signed an agreement for the establishment of a joint commission as part of efforts to further strengthen their bilateral ties.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Odein Ajumogobia, signed for Nigeria; while his Burkinabe counterpart, Mr. Bedouna Alain-Yoda, signed for his country.

The joint commission, when established, will foster cooperation in economic, cultural and technical matters between the two nations.

Speaking to NAN, Ajumogobia said that the commission would also facilitate the establishment of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement, and deepen person-to-person contact as a means to fostering integration in the region.

“With this framework in place, an enabling environment will be created for private sector investment, and easy transportation, among others,’’ he said.

The minister, who noted the contribution of Burkina Faso to peace keeping in the region, said stability in the Economic Community of West African States was a collective responsibility of all the member states.

He also called on the Cote d’Ivoire government to sensitise its people on the credibility of the recent elections, and urged the government of Guinea to uphold the verdict of the supreme court ruling when it is eventually delivered.

“We have no choice but to embrace peace and stability. Conflict is not an option, it is our collective responsibility to ensure stability in the sub-region. Conflict in any of the state will impact on the region at large,’’ Ajumogobia said.
